A Cancer after a breakup, and the attachment that outlasts the wanting
Four months, and he's been unfailingly kind about all of it. He replied to the birthday message. He asked after your dad. Somebody told you he's been very quiet, which you'd already guessed, and somebody else told you he's fine. What you can't get near is any of the inside of it, and you keep swinging between being certain he's in bits and being certain you've invented the whole thing.

A real reading looks like this
A Cancer grieves for a long time and almost entirely out of sight. That much most pages will tell you.
The part they leave out is the one you need at four months. He will stay attached to you long after he has stopped wanting the relationship back, and those two things are not in conflict and do not run on the same clock. Reading one as evidence of the other is what keeps people waiting through an entire year.
Water keeps, and closing is not clearing
The mechanism is simple and it explains almost everything else on this page.
A water sign takes things in and holds them. There is no discharge phase, no equivalent of a fire sign getting a feeling out of the house by moving. The loss goes in and stays in, and it does not decay on a schedule.
What a Cancer does on top of that is close. He shuts the perimeter, usually quickly, often before he could tell you why. And the closing feels final from both sides, which misleads everybody, because closing a door and clearing a room are separate operations and he has only done the first one.
So four months on you are dealing with a man who has genuinely ended it and has genuinely not let go of it. Neither half is a performance.
The private part, and why the wrong thing shows
He is not concealing anything from you in the sense of hiding it. There is simply no outward channel.
What makes this sign harder to read than the other quiet ones is that something does show and it is the wrong thing. A Cancer four months out is often perfectly warm. He replies. He remembers the operation your father was having. So everybody concludes he is fine and reports it back in those words, and you are left with a description that has nothing to do with the inside of him.
That warmth is real. It is also not a status update, and treating it as one is where most of the damage in the months after gets done.
Attachment and wanting are two different systems
This is the distinction the whole page turns on, so it is worth drawing slowly.
Attachment in a water sign is automatic. It does not require his consent, it did not arrive by decision and it cannot be revoked by one. It is closer to a physical property of him than to an opinion he holds about you.
Wanting the relationship back is something else entirely. That belongs to the part of him that closed in the first place, and it is a decision, made under exactly the same conditions that produced the ending.
Which is how a Cancer can carry somebody for years with no intention of returning, and feel no tension in it. He is not being dishonest when he is kind, and he is not sending a signal. Both are simply true and he lives inside both.
The reverse happens too and is worth naming. He can want you back and still not move, because the shut door is the safe one and the sign is built around safety.
When it lands, and why it keeps landing
Not in a fortnight, and not on a curve you could draw.
Grief in this sign runs on recurrence rather than elapsed time. The first time something comes round that used to involve you. A room. A date in the calendar. So it does not peak and taper so much as keep returning, at intervals, for a long time.
Which means the honest answer on timing is a wide window that nobody should be sharpening for you, and it means eight months can be worse than three.
The limit of a sun sign here
It gives you the holding and the privacy. It has no view at all on whether anything is going to happen.
The moon is the placement doing the real work on a question like this, because it runs what somebody does with a feeling when there is nobody to perform for. Behind a Cancer sun it can be anything. A fixed moon keeps hold of the whole thing and never mentions it again. A mutable one can genuinely move on underneath a surface that looks identical. The hour of his birth is what separates them, and it is worth the awkward message to whoever was in the room.
What Stella asks that nobody else does
Whether he has told his family.
That sounds like an odd question and on this sign it is the most informative one available. Home and family are where the private world of a Cancer ends, so a man who has told his mother it is over has filed it as final, and a man who has not usually has not filed it anywhere at all. She is careful to say the second one is not a sign he is coming back, because plenty of Cancers never file it and never return. It tells her the state is open, and open is a condition rather than a direction.
Then the moon, and an hour if one exists, for the pace of the holding.
There is one question she turns down every time on this sign, and it is the one everybody brings. Whether there is somebody else. Nothing in a birth chart is about a third person, all of it is about him, so an answer would have to be built out of nothing and would land on a woman who has almost certainly done nothing to you. Not caution. The invented version is the one that gets acted on.
What sits either side of this
If the silence started inside something that had not formally ended, that is a different situation with a different read on it.
And the question underneath this one, which is whether he turns up again, has its own page and its own catch. The short version is that with this sign the answer is more often yes than people expect, and yes means less than people expect.
Stop taking the temperature
Four months of polite, warm contact is not a reading and it will never become one. You could get another four of them.
Bring his date, who ended it, and whether anything in his life has actually closed around the ending. Ask somebody to separate the attachment from the wanting, because from where you are standing they look like one thing.
What people said after theirs
★★★★★She separated him still caring about me from him wanting me back and I did not enjoy it one bit. Two years on he is still the person who checks in when something happens to my family and he has never once come back. Both of those are exactly what she described. I would rather have known in the June than found out slowly.
★★★★★I asked whether he had met somebody and she would not touch it, said nothing in a chart is about another person. I pushed and she said the same thing again in a nicer way. What I got instead was the thing about his family, which was true, and which nobody else had thought to ask about.
★★★★★Some of it landed and some did not. The Taurus moon read was uncanny, he has never let go of anything in his life. She was much vaguer on when he might surface and told me straight that she was guessing without his hour. He surfaced in the November, in the way she said it would happen, around something ordinary.

Questions people ask us
How does a Cancer man deal with a breakup?
Privately, and for much longer than the people around him realise. Water takes a loss in and holds it rather than discharging it, so there is no visible fortnight of chaos to point at and no obvious end to the process either. What tends to show on the surface is ordinary functioning and a certain amount of warmth, which everyone reads as recovery. It is not evidence of anything much.
Do Cancers take a long time to get over someone?
Yes, and the honest version is longer than that question expects, because getting over somebody is not really the operation happening. This sign keeps what it takes in, so the attachment tends to persist as a background fact rather than fading on a schedule. Nobody can give you a number, and the number would depend on his moon far more than on his sun.
Why is my Cancer ex still being nice to me?
Because you are somebody he has kept, and kindness toward the people he has kept is close to automatic in this sign. Reading it as a door being held open is the most common mistake made here, and it costs people months. He can be genuinely warm, genuinely interested in your family, and nowhere near wanting the relationship back, with no contradiction he can feel.
Does a Cancer man ever really let go of an ex?
Rarely in the way people mean by letting go, and that is less flattering than it sounds. What he does is stop expecting anything, while continuing to hold the whole thing intact. So years later he can remember it in detail, with the original feeling attached, and still be entirely committed to somebody else and entirely uninterested in going back.
Is my Cancer ex hurting or is he fine?
From outside, at four months, those two produce almost identical evidence, and anyone claiming to tell them apart from a birthday is guessing. Both versions are quiet, both are polite, both look like a man getting on with things. What sometimes distinguishes them is whether anything about his life has closed around the ending, which is not astrology, it is observation.
Do Cancers regret ending a relationship?
Often, and it does not follow that they act on it. Regret in this sign runs alongside the attachment rather than being produced by a new conclusion, so it can be present continuously for years without ever turning into a decision to return. That is the distinction worth holding on to, because from where you are standing regret looks like the beginning of something and it frequently is not.
