Strength in love, and the gap between holding something and putting up with it

Everyone has told you how strong you are about this. Your sister said it at Christmas, a friend said it again in June, and each time you smiled and moved the conversation on, because from the inside it has never once felt like strength. It feels like a Tuesday. Tonight you shuffled and got the woman with the lion, and the first thing you read was courage, and now you are sitting up wondering whether the card just told you to keep going.

Bring the arrangement, not the keyword

Say what you turned, how long the current version of this has been running, and the thing you have stopped bringing up because it never changes anything. Readers are on at whatever hour this is, and the first 200 credits are free, with no card needed.

A real reading looks like this

cian, 14 march 1989. two years together and hes still not ready to move in. hes said it three times now and nothing has changed since last summer. everyone keeps telling me how patient i am. i pulled strength tonight and i think it means hang on but i honestly dont know anymore
Gillian. It does not say hang on, and I want you to have that before anything else. Look at what is in the picture instead of the word printed under it. Nobody in it is straining. Her hands are at the animal's mouth and the animal has leant into her, there is no chain on it and no cage, and the only chain anywhere in the card is a rope of flowers she happens to be wearing. That is not a woman getting through a lion. It is a woman handling one. So I read this as a card about the manner of your holding, and I am not hedging that part. Here is my limit on it. It sits on your side of the table, it will not tell me what he wants, and I am not going to fill that in for you. Give me a date instead. When did not ready first get said?
june last year. then again at his brothers wedding in october. and once more in february. nothing changed in between any of them
Three times, and fourteen months with nothing moving between them. Then you already hold the thing you came in for, you have just never been allowed to call it anything. I have pulled again on the arrangement rather than on him and got the Two of Pentacles, and I want you to see what it shares with the card you turned. Look above the woman's head in Strength. A sideways figure eight. Now look at the ribbon looping the two coins in the Two of Pentacles, the same shape doing the same job, which is keeping something in the air and never letting it land. Two cards, one symbol, and there is no end written into that symbol anywhere. That is the read. Not that he is cruel and not that this is over. That it can run precisely as it is for another fourteen months and nothing in the machinery of it will stop. So answer me straight. What would ready look like on the day it arrived, specific enough that you would know it had happened?
i suppose him just saying it. i dont know. that looks awful written down
It is the most useful line you have typed tonight. You have been waiting on a sentence, and a sentence costs nothing at all to postpone. That is the whole of it. Now, I am not telling you to leave him, and I would be wary of any reader who arrived at that verdict off one card and a birthdate. Staying is a decision as well. There is a version of it where you stay having actually chosen the terms, and that is a different life from the one you are in even if the address never changes. For any shift I would watch the run of a couple of months rather than one conversation, and I would keep even that loose, because this card has no clock in it at all. Tell me one thing. When you picture saying out loud that you have stopped waiting, whose face comes up first?

Strength in a love reading is about the manner of your handling, and hardly ever about how much you can take. Worth getting straight early, because the word printed under this card everywhere you look is courage, and courage is the reading that sends people back into another year of exactly what they are already doing.

So start with the picture. A woman with her hands at a lion's mouth, closing it, gently. The animal is not fighting her. No cage, no weapon, and the only chain in the card is a rope of flowers she is wearing rather than using.

Nothing in the image is straining. If what you are doing feels like straining, you are not in this card yet.

the part of it nobody reads

Above her head there is a sideways figure eight. The Magician has the same symbol over his, and in the Two of Pentacles it comes back as a ribbon looping two coins that are never allowed to land. It means ongoing, with no end built into it.

That is the warning inside a card everybody receives as a compliment. This is not a crisis being survived. It is a state maintained, indefinitely, by one person who is good at it.

The mountains are in the distance. Nobody here is climbing them.

holding, and putting up with

Holding is when your hands are on something and it answers. The situation moves because you are there. The lion leans in.

Putting up with it is absorbing something that is not changing. You take the weight, you take it well, and the thing carries on precisely as it was.

From outside they are identical. Both get called strong, by your mother, by the friend who says she does not know how you do it. From inside they are nearly identical too, which is the real trouble.

One test, and it takes a minute. Has the thing you have been strong about actually moved in the time you have been strong about it? Not softened. Not discussed at length. Moved.

If it has, you are holding it and the holding works. If it has not, you have been supplying stability to a situation as a service, and everyone including you has called that patience.

The undefined thing you have been graceful about for two years. The man who is not ready, said in June and again in October with nothing in between. Neither is a strength problem. You already have the strength, which is the part the card just confirmed.

What it asks is what the strength is for. And sometimes the honest answer is that a decision has been sitting there a while wearing the costume of a hard season.

when it lands reversed

The lists say weakness and self doubt. That happens, and it is not what mostly comes through the door.

Mostly, reversed is force. The hands have tightened, the gentleness that made the card work is gone, and what is left is management: his moods anticipated, your messages timed, a Thursday spent pre solving a Saturday. Control does not stop being control because it is done gently and out of fear.

The second version is quieter and does more damage. The discipline turns inward and becomes self suppression. You have not raised the difficult subject since the spring, you have got very good at not minding things, and somewhere in there you started calling it maturity. Nobody will query that, because a woman who never makes anything awkward is a pleasure to live with.

what it cannot do

The card sits on your side of the table, so it is one of the least informative in the deck about him. Any reading that turns it into a report on his intentions has swapped cards on you. It will not say where he was on Friday or who was with him, and a reader producing that has started writing a story with a real person in it.

No date in it either, a stretch at most. And it does not tell you which way to decide, only that a decision is what is in front of you.

how Gillian reads Strength

Gillian will not congratulate you on how well you are coping. Everybody arriving with this card has already been told they are strong by three separate people, and in her view that praise is part of the machinery keeping the arrangement running.

Her first question is never about him. It is a date. When did the current version of this begin. Not when you met, when it became this. People give her a month and then go quiet, because saying June, last year out loud does something that thinking it never did.

Her second is what would count as it being finished, specific enough that you would know on the day. When the answer is a sentence he might one day say, she tells you plainly that sentences can be postponed forever at no cost to the person not saying them. She also reads the animal as the situation rather than the man, every time, and checks before she assumes.

And she is careful about the obvious wrong turn. This is not a leave him card. Staying is a decision too, and there is a difference between staying because you chose the terms and staying because choosing is the hard part.

what other cards do to it

Next to the Chariot you have two control cards working in opposite directions, one by force and one by contact. Both out usually means one is being used on a situation that called for the other.

Next to the Eight of Cups it gets uncomfortable and clear. One says you are able to hold this. The other says a person can walk away from something that was never broken and still be right.

Pulled about somebody who has gone, it reads on the months since rather than on the relationship, and that has its own page. If the question underneath yours is how much longer, should I wait or move on takes it directly.

bring the arrangement

You already hold what this card is asking for. The date, and the number of times nothing changed after a conversation, filed under patience because there was never a row to point at.

Bring that instead of the keyword. Gillian will want the date inside two messages and will have a view by the third. Cheaper found out in live chat than across another fourteen months of being admirable about it.

What people said after theirs

★★★★★

I came in wanting to be told that waiting was the right thing and that I was doing well. Gillian asked me for a date and then let the silence sit there while I worked out it had been nineteen months. She never once told me to go. Somehow that made it both better and considerably worse.

★★★★★

Mine came out reversed and I had braced for the weakness lecture every meanings site prints. What she said instead was that I had turned all of the discipline on myself and had not raised a difficult subject since about February. True, and I had never once put it in those words.

Edie, verified reading
★★★★★

A bit blunt for me if I am honest, I wanted more warmth than I got. But she was right that I could not describe what I was waiting for, and six weeks on that is still the sentence I keep landing back on.

Questions people ask us

What does the Strength card mean in a love reading?

It describes how you are handling the relationship rather than how it turns out. The picture is a woman with her hands at a lion's mouth and no struggle anywhere in the frame, so the card is about influence through contact rather than force. In a live love question it lands on patience, tolerance, and the amount you have been absorbing without complaint. The reading worth doing is whether the absorbing is changing anything.

Is Strength a yes or a no in love?

Neither, and squeezing a direction out of it is where most readings of this card go wrong. It reports on capacity, which is real information and not a forecast. If you need a yes or a no from a spread, take it from the cards around this one that carry movement, and let Strength tell you what you are bringing to the situation. Used that way it is one of the more honest cards in the deck.

What does Strength reversed mean in love?

The keyword lists say weakness and self doubt. What walks through the door far more often is the opposite problem, which is force. The hands have tightened, the gentleness that made the card work has gone, and what is left is management: his moods handled in advance, your messages timed, a Thursday spent pre solving a Saturday. The other reversed version is self control aimed at yourself until it becomes self suppression, and nobody flags that one, because a woman who never makes anything difficult is very pleasant to live with.

Does Strength mean I should be patient and wait?

Not on its own, and this is the misread that costs the most time. Patience with something in view is what the picture shows, because the woman is doing something to an animal that responds to her. Patience with nothing named at the end of it is just the shape your life has taken. If you cannot say what you are waiting for in terms concrete enough to recognise on the day it arrives, the card is asking about that rather than approving the wait.

Does the lion in the Strength card mean my partner?

Usually not, and assuming it does sends the whole reading sideways. Read the lion as the situation, or as the want underneath the situation, before you read it as a person. Where it does describe someone it is far more often something in the asker: the anger that has never been let out of the room, or the need she has been embarrassed by for years. A card with one woman and one animal in it is about a relationship with something, and the something is rarely the man.

Does Strength mean a strong relationship?

It means a relationship in which somebody is doing the holding, which is a different claim and worth separating carefully. Plenty of solid couples turn this card up during a hard year and it reads well on them, because there is real tenderness in the picture. What it does not confirm is that the strength is shared. If it keeps arriving for you and never for anything else in the spread, notice whose hands are doing the work.
