Pulled about somebody who has already gone, The Lovers is a choice already made. In a live relationship it is a fork you are standing at. About an ex it is one somebody walked through, and the questions left are whose it was, when, and whether it can be walked a second time.

why this is the card people want to use as proof

There is a reason you have been carrying it round. Look the meaning up and a great deal of what comes back mentions a triangle, a third party, a choice between two people. If he moved on quickly, that lands like confirmation of something you had already decided.

So take this early. The card describes a choice. It does not say what the choice was between and it names nobody in it.

That limit is real rather than polite. Hand somebody a shape for the other side of a man's decision, a person, a workplace, a night of the week, and it has been written for her, and it goes looking for a real woman to land on. It usually finds one who has done nothing.

And nothing in the image is hiding. No cloak, no turned back, nobody concealing anything. Whatever happened to you, this card is not describing a lie. It describes something weighed and picked with the price visible, which is colder and easier to work with.

Start here, because almost nobody does. They assume his.

Often it was. He chose to go, or chose something that could not hold both of you, and what sits at the far end of a man's fork is more often a life than a person. A city. A job. A version of himself he had been promising his family since he was twenty.

Sometimes it was yours. Women pull this about a man they left, read it as if it were about him, then wonder for a year why it will not settle.

And sometimes nobody chose. It closed by default, the way an option does when two people avoid it long enough, and that reading never finishes, because there is no moment to point at.

The work worth doing is dating the decision rather than the breakup. They are hardly ever the same week.

what it says about him coming back

More open than most cards you could have drawn, and the reason is not the one people hope for. A fork stays where it is. Plenty of cards describe something finished. This one does not.

Underneath sits the honest note. A second choice is a second choice. It is not a reversal of the first. If it came it would be made by a man in changed conditions with the first price already paid by both of you, and it would arrive smaller and duller than the scene running in your head since the spring.

Timing goes with his conditions rather than a date. Whatever he chose has to move first, which is a question about seasons rather than weeks.

reversed, on somebody who has gone

Reversed it reads two ways. The first is values: you wanted different lives, nothing to point at, nobody at fault, which is the ending nobody can explain afterwards and the reason it stays open in your head for years.

The second is regret sitting on a decision that still stands. Not a change of heart. A man living inside a choice he made properly and finding the price higher than he costed it. Both can be true while nothing happens at all, and reading the second as a return coming adds something the card does not carry.

how Gillian reads it

Gillian works on decisions, so she puts this card on a timeline before she puts any feeling into it.

Her first question is never what he felt. It is when he stopped making plans that had you in them past a certain month. People offer her the breakup date and she does not want it. She wants the last thing that got booked, the holiday nobody looked at properly, the flat viewing in April that stopped being mentioned. A decision leaves marks in a calendar months before it is said out loud, and once the month is found, most of what was unexplained about the ending explains itself.

The second thing she does is take the third person out of the room, on practical grounds rather than kind ones. You cannot make one decision of your own against a woman you invented, and every hour spent building her is an hour off the question you can answer.

On return she is blunt. She asks what would have to be different in his life for the decision to come out the other way, and if nothing has changed, nothing changes, and she says so instead of selling you a spring.

Beside the Six of Cups, what is pulling him backwards is memory rather than intention, and memory can run for years without ever producing a decision.

With Judgement the ending is being reviewed rather than defended, which is the closest thing to a genuine second-choice signal in the deck.
