The Magician in love, and the question it actually asks

The Magician in love means the capability is there. Every tool this would take is already on the table, and the card says nothing whatsoever about whether he picks one up. That is the whole of it, and it is why the card feels good to draw and strange to sit with an hour later.

Upright it describes a person who could. Reversed it usually describes the same skill aimed at how things look rather than how they go, or a set of tools laid out so long they have stopped counting as a plan.

what is actually in the picture

Everybody quotes the hands. One raised, one pointing at the ground, and every meanings page will tell you what that signifies. It is also the part of the card that tells you least about your relationship.

The part that tells you something is the table. There is a cup on it, a sword, a wand and a coin. One from each suit, which is the whole deck compressed into four objects, and those are the four things any person has to work with. Feeling. Words. Appetite, the thing that starts something. And the practical, material end of life, the part that costs money and time and shows up in a diary.

All four are there. Whatever this would take, he has it.

Below the table there are roses and lilies, and they matter more than they look. Those are garden flowers. Somebody planted them and somebody keeps them alive. This is not a card about weather arriving. It is a card about what a person can make when they decide to make it.

what that says about him, and about you

So the question this card puts to a live love question is narrow, and it is uncomfortable. Which of the four has he picked up?

Words are the cheapest. A man can produce paragraphs at 1am for a year at no cost to himself, and it will feel like the most attention you have ever been given. Feeling is nearly as cheap, and it can be entirely sincere while it is being cheap. Both are real. Neither leaves a mark on anything.

The coin is the expensive one. Sunday afternoons. Meeting people who know him. A plan with a month attached. Anything that has to be moved out of the way to make room for you. When three tools are getting a workout and the fourth has not been touched since February, you have not been lied to. You have been given the two that were free.

There is a second half most readings skip. Those four objects are not his alone. They are the standard set, and you have them in front of you too.

If this has been running for months on feeling and words from both sides, notice that waiting is not one of the tools on the table. The card is fairly pointed about that.

where the card stops

Capability is a state. Intention is an event. The Magician can only report the state, and the leap between the two is the one everybody makes on the way to bed.

It passes no judgement on what gets built either. A card about equipment is neutral about the use it is put to, and plenty of things get built beautifully that should never have been built at all.

And nothing on that table is a person. It is an inventory. So if the real question is who else has his attention, there is nothing here to answer with, and a reader who produces a name or a workplace off an inventory has invented it. An invented detail attaches itself to somebody real who has done nothing. What can honestly be read is how he feels about you and what he is prepared to spend on it, which is a genuine question with a genuine answer.

how Shira reads it

Shira does not start with the figure. She starts with the table, and she asks you to account for it out loud.

Which of these four has he handed you, and when. She wants it literally. Voice notes and long messages are the sword. Telling you he is frightened of how much he likes you is the cup. Deciding on a Tuesday that the two of you are going somewhere in August is the coin. She takes your answers, sets them against the four objects and tells you which one is not in use, and she does that before she reads anything else, because a card about equipment is answered by an inventory rather than by a feeling.

Then she does the same for your side, which people are less keen on.

The other thing she will not do is read this as a warning about a manipulative man unless a second card puts it there. The reversed keyword lists all say deception, so women arrive holding the Magician having already decided they are being played. The ordinary version is far less dramatic and far more expensive: everything needed to build it, sitting on a table, for another eight months.

the cards that change the read

Beside the Two of Cups it stops being abstract. The Magician stands at his table alone. The Two of Cups puts a second person in front of him with a cup in her hand, and the pair together read as ability with somewhere to go.

Beside the Seven of Swords, take the warning. That is the pairing where the reversed keyword earns its place, because now there is a card in the spread about somebody leaving quietly with something that is not his.

Beside the Four of Cups the news is duller and likelier. Something offered, arms folded, nobody reaching. Two cards agreeing that the material for this exists and nobody in the picture is doing much with it.

So the card has told you something true and it has told you the smaller half. What is missing is which tool he has been using, and you already know that. Saying it out loud to somebody who has no stake in the answer is most of the work, and you can do that in a chat tonight.
