The Sun in love, and the specific kind of good it means

The Sun in a love reading is the most straightforwardly good card in the deck, and on its own that helps you almost not at all, because good comes in kinds. This one is specific, and it is not the kind people assume. Not passion. Not fate, and not a wedding. It is ease and visibility: being seen plainly by somebody and not having to manage a single thing about it. If that sounds smaller than you were hoping for, stay with it. Most people who pull this card have not had it in a while, and they know it by its absence.

A child on a white horse, out in the open at midday. Nothing on. No saddle, no reins in its hands. Above it a sun with a face, and a sky with no cloud in it anywhere.

Three things there do the work, and the sun is not one of them.

The child has nothing on. Which is not about sex. It is the absence of anything put on: no costume, no armour, nothing arranged for anybody.

Nobody is steering. The horse walks, the rider does not direct it and is not gripping it either. That is what ease looks like when somebody has to draw it.

And the sky is empty. Worth stopping on, because most of this deck has weather in it. Rain in the Three of Swords, cloud across the Moon. Here there is nothing overhead to read. Nothing is coming.

what ease is actually like, which surprises people

People expect the Sun to look like happiness. Laughing in a photograph, the good version of a Saturday. It is quieter than that, and more boring.

It is not rehearsing. It is sending the message at the speed you wanted to send it, saying the unflattering thing about your day and nothing happening afterwards, your face doing what your face does.

You find it by what has stopped. The drafts you no longer write. The forty minutes you used to leave before replying, which you have not left in months and never noticed dropping.

Which is why it lands flat on so many people who get it. Nothing to point at.

And why most people reading this recognise it from somewhere other than their own house. One relationship a long time ago. The friend whose boyfriend nobody is impressed by, who has not been anxious since March.

It is also not intensity, and those two get confused constantly. Coming out of something with heat in it and no ease at all, this card reads like a demotion for about a week.

the caveat, which is not the one you expect

The honest limit here is not that the card might be lying. It describes a condition, says nothing about how long the condition holds, and has no opinion on whether the two of you want the same shape of life.

Ease is not agreement. You can be entirely unguarded with somebody and want different decades. The card is silent on children, cities, money and whether he intends to ask you anything, and a reading that turns midday light into an engagement has swapped the card for the thing you wanted.

Reversed is where most real questions sit, and it is rarely a catastrophe. The commonest version is warmth that has to be worked at. The light is genuine and it is not free. Somebody keeps it going by hand, daily, and it is nearly always the same somebody. Not a bad relationship. An expensive one, and the cost is invisible from outside, him included.

The other version is happiness being performed, and the audience is usually not him. Your mother. The friends who watched the last one end. The story you have told so often that amending it would feel like an admission.

Shira asks about your outbox before she asks about him

Shira texts like a friend, which means she reads how you text, and with this card she spends the first stretch of the reading on your outbox rather than on him.

Three questions, always in that order. Do you read a message back before you send it to him. How long do you leave it. And when was the last time you said something to him you had not checked first.

She is not listening to the answers. She is listening for the pause. People who have this card answer immediately and find the question a bit silly. People who want it explain, and the explaining is the read.

Her second move catches more of them. She asks who you told first when something good happened this month. Not the crisis, the good thing. If he was not automatically the first, she reads the card again with that in it.

Reversed, she asks who the good version is being put on for, and keeps asking until a name comes back that is not his.

What she will not do is convert this into an engagement. She gets asked constantly and gives the same answer: the Sun is weather, a proposal is an event with a date on it, and no amount of good weather has ever produced one.

the cards that change it

With the Four of Wands you get the thing people were actually asking about. Two figures walking under a canopy toward something set up in advance. The Sun says the climate is fine, the Four of Wands says somebody has arranged a day, and it is the one pairing where the answer to are we going anywhere is visible rather than inferred.

With the Devil, both cards have unclothed figures and only one of them is free. Same nakedness, different reason for it. When they turn up together the reading is usually about which of the two you have been calling the other.

Turn it up about a man who has already gone and it stops describing a relationship and starts describing you, which is a different page.

Daylight is not kind. It is only accurate. It shows the room as it is, corners included, which is why this card is worth more than the congratulations it collects.

So take yours into it. What you turned, the length of it, and the last message you wrote twice before sending. Shira will want the outbox before the man, which people find either funny or uncomfortably close. Somebody is reading now, the first 200 credits are free, and no card gets asked for.
