The Moon for an ex, and whether it says he is coming back

The Moon pulled about an ex is not proof that he lied to you, and there is no return in it either. It says the situation cannot be seen clearly from where you are standing. Smaller than the answer you wanted, and true.

Say the first part twice. This is the card people turn when they already suspect they were lied to, and the pull to take it as the confirmation nobody else will give you is enormous. It is not confirmation. It says something is unclear, and unclear has to include the possibility that your own fear has been doing the work. Treat a card as evidence and somebody real gets accused on the strength of a picture with no name in it.

The road is the part worth reading

Everyone describes this card by its animals. Pulled about somebody gone, the useful piece is the road.

It starts at the bottom of the card, where you are, and it runs away from you. Between the two towers, up over the hills, out of the frame. The card does not show where it ends, because from where the picture was drawn there is nothing further to see.

Which is an exact description of your position. There is more of this and it goes somewhere, and no amount of standing at this end makes the next bend appear. You have been at the same point since he went, turning the card again.

The other detail is the water. Something is crawling out of the pool at the foot of the picture, half in and half out, and it only surfaces at night. Which is what the small hours are for. Whatever stays under all day gets out at two, and it always looks larger then than at eight.

What it says about the ending

That you never got a clear view of it. That much is real and worth having.

But it says something the other secretive cards do not, and this is the piece that changes your evenings. Under most of them the answer exists and somebody sits on it. Under this one it may not exist in a form anybody could hand over, him included. Plenty of men who end things could not give you the true account under oath, because they have not got it. They have a summary they can live with, and you were given that.

A bad summary and a lie are different objects. From where you are they are indistinguishable, which is the fog, and it is why months of analysis have produced nothing.

Does it say he is coming back

Nothing in it forecasts a return. There is no timing in the card and no direction of travel except away.

It says one thing about return that is worth more than a yes would be. If he came back under these conditions you could not tell whether it was real, because the fog is on your ability to read this rather than on the relationship. It does not lift because a message arrives. People who reconcile in the dark walk off the same unlit ground twice.

Reversed, which is the good one

The Moon reversed is the fog clearing, one of the few reversals in this deck that is better news than the card the right way up.

For an ex it rarely arrives as a confession. It comes as a clear look, sideways and through something ordinary. Somebody mentions something in passing. You reread the last message in daylight and it says less than you remember.

Which is why it can land as a loss. A large mystery swapped for a small dull answer is a bereavement of its own kind, and nobody warns you about that part.

Why Shira will not read this card on its own

Shira does not read the Moon as a single pull. Not for an ex, not for anybody, and she says so out loud before she reads it.

Her reason is mechanical rather than mystical. A picture with nothing specific in it takes the shape of whoever turned it, so a lone Moon agrees with the person holding it every time. Bring it suspicion and it reads as proof. Bring it hope and it reads as a secret still being carried. She puts two more down first, so the Moon has something to be unclear in relation to.

Then she asks what sentence was in your head when you shuffled, before she interprets anything at all. On this card the question you cut the deck with shapes the answer more than the card does, and she would rather have it on the table than trip over it later.

The last part is why people either take to her at once or find her hard going. Of the two she lays alongside, one goes on you and one on the ending, and neither on him, when him is what you came in wanting all three for. The readable material in a finished relationship, she says, is mostly on the side still in the room.

The cards it turns up beside

With the Six of Cups, take care. That is the reunion card, and a warm past under an unlit present is a year of rereading rather than a door.

With Judgement, people hear the trumpet and read a return. It is a summons rather than a reunion, and beside this card it usually means a reckoning you hold alone.

With the Eight of Cups, look closely, because your card is inside that one. Same moon, same face, except somebody is on the road rather than standing at the bottom staring up. Together they say the leaving was decided under this same poor light, which is worth knowing before you take it as final.

Pulled inside something still running it points at a live relationship rather than a closed one, which the Moon in love handles on a page of its own. The road in that card runs out of the picture. It does not stop. It stops being visible from where you are, and every night spent asking the deck for the next hundred yards has been spent on the same square foot of it.

What does move is describing the ending out loud to somebody who was not in it. Give it the date, his actual sentence rather than your summary of it, and the piece you have never been able to file.
