The Moon in love, and what you are actually seeing

One card before bed, because you wanted something you could hold, and what came up was a road under a full moon with a face on it, a dog and a wolf on either side. Every page you have opened since leads with the word illusion. So now you are sitting up in the dark working out which part of the last two months was the illusion. Whether he has been lying to you. Or whether you have been doing something to the evidence.

Bring what happened, without the joins

The card you turned, what he has actually done, and the hour of the night you decided what it meant. Somebody is on now, 200 free credits to start, and no card is taken.

A real reading looks like this

i pulled the moon about me and meurig, 3 may 1988. two years together and hes been different since easter. does this mean hes lying to me
Maren. It means you can't see this clearly at the minute, and that's a statement about the light rather than about him, so no, I'm not handing you a lie on the strength of it. I will read it properly though. With this card I start somewhere odd, so bear with me. What time of day was it when you decided he was lying? Not when you first wondered. When you decided.
about 1am probably. its always about 1am
Then that is the card, more or less exactly, and I'd have been surprised by any other answer. Now do something for me and don't tidy it. Tell me what he has actually done since Easter, in order, with none of the joins in. Not gone distant. The events. I'll do the joining myself, because the joining is the half I want to read and it's yours, not his. While you type it I've turned one on him and got the Page of Wands. A young lad in a desert holding a stick up and admiring it. Somebody in love with the feel of a thing, standing on ground with nothing planted in it. That isn't a man running an affair. It's a man who has never had to make anything hold. One more while you're at it. How far ahead have the two of you ever planned anything?
he stopped staying sundays, hes on his phone more, he didnt come to my sisters thing in may. and we dont plan. he says he hates planning and honestly i liked that about him
There it is, and it's a better answer than the one you came for. Three things happened and you have joined them about nine times. But look at what the joining has been holding up for two years as well as what it has been threatening since Easter, because this card runs both ways and almost nobody says the second half out loud. He hates planning. You've been calling that free since the first summer. By this light a man with no plans looks like a man who can't be tied down. In daylight he's a man who has put nothing in the ground with you, and that was true long before Easter and has nothing to do with anybody else. What I won't do is tell you where he was on the Sundays he stopped staying. I don't see rooms, and if I made one up you'd spend a fortnight testing it against a real person. What I can see is the ground, and there's nothing in it. Ahead of this I'd watch the next few weeks rather than name you a day, and I'd expect it to come to a head over something small and practical rather than a confession. Now answer me this one honestly. If he swore to you tonight that there has never been anybody else, and you believed him, would you be happy in this?

The Moon in a love reading says you cannot see this clearly. That is a statement about the light, not about his character, and the whole card lives in that distinction.

People reach for deception first, because illusion is the headline word on every meanings page in existence. Sometimes it is that. Far more often it is distortion, which is a different problem with a different fix: a gap in what you know, filled in by whatever you happened to be feeling at the hour you filled it.

the picture is making an argument

Look at the two animals. A dog and a wolf, howling at the same moon, drawn identically apart from the set of the ears. One of them sleeps by a fire. The other would take your hand off.

In that light you cannot tell which is which, and the card does not tell you either. It puts them side by side and lets you notice that you had already decided.

That is the argument, and it is unusually blunt for a major. One shape, two readings, depending on what is lighting it. The second reading is happening in you.

Moonlight is the other half of it. Borrowed light, cold, second hand, and it flattens whatever it lands on. It does not make things invisible. It makes them ambiguous, which is worse, because ambiguity is something you can work with and still get wrong.

when the relationship is still running

Upright, in something you are currently inside, this reads as a relationship being run on interpretation rather than on lies. Three things happened. You have made nine connections between them, and by two in the morning the connections feel every bit as factual as the events.

The direction of the distortion is the part nobody covers. Everyone reads this card as fear inflating something small into a betrayal, and it does do that. It does the opposite just as often and gets no credit for it at all.

By moonlight, a man who is unavailable looks like a great love with obstacles in the way. A man who never plans looks like a man who cannot be tied down. Someone careful with you looks deep. The same fog that turns a decent man into a suspect has been keeping a thin thing looking full, and if you have been two years in something that never quite resolves, the flattering distortion is the one to check first.

Which one is running is answerable, and it does not need a card. Take the thing you concluded at one in the morning and ask whether you would put it in writing at eleven the next day. Most of what this card produces does not survive that.

the caveat, said plainly

The Moon cannot tell you which way your distortion is running, and it certainly cannot tell you what he did.

That matters more here than on almost any other card, because this is the one people bring already holding a verdict, and it will agree with the verdict every time. A picture with no identity in it takes on whatever identity you walked in with. So a reading that comes back with edges on it, a name, a workplace, a night of the week, has not read this card, because there are no edges in it to read. Those came out of a person, and you would take them home and use them on somebody real.

What does read is the shape. Whether the pull on him is toward something or away from everything. Whether the fog sits between the two of you or all the way round the pair of you. How long the ground has been like this, which is usually longer than the thing you are upset about tonight.

the hour you decided, which is where Maren starts

Maren asks for a timestamp before she will read this card, and it throws people who expected her to open on him.

The question never varies. What time of day was it when you decided. Not when you first wondered, when you decided. On a card about light, the hour a conclusion was formed in is the most useful thing you own, and it is the one piece nobody thinks to offer.

Then she splits it in two and reads the halves separately. On one side the events, in order, described the way a neighbour with no stake in it would describe them. On the other side the joins, meaning everything you added to turn those events into a story. She reads the second column as a card in its own right. It runs about three times longer than the first, and the ratio is the reading.

After that she runs it forward, which is the thing she is known for. What the current light does to the next few weeks if it holds, and she is flat about the fact that fog does not clear because somebody reassures you from inside it.

the cards that change it

With the Sun, you have both light sources on the table and the read is about sequence. Which one is nearer. A Moon now and a Sun later is a wait. A Sun behind you and a Moon in front of you is worth taking seriously.

With the High Priestess, two cards that both get called secretive and mean opposite things. Hers is information somebody is sitting on and could hand over tonight. This one is information nobody has, him included. If both are out, sort which half is which before you act on either.

With the Three of Swords, the thing you cannot see has already cut somebody. The fog is doing damage limitation rather than hiding a plot, and the conversation is overdue rather than dangerous.

About a man who is already gone, this card stops describing a relationship and starts describing the months since he went, which is what the Moon for an ex takes on a page of its own. If what you cannot read is a man who runs warm and then cold, that pattern has its own card behind it, and if you genuinely cannot tell whether he is stuck or finished, that question goes at it head on.

You can check most of this yourself. The one thing you cannot check is your own light, because you would be checking it with the same light, and that is the job in this that needs somebody standing somewhere else.

So bring the card, the two years, and the sentence you would not put in writing at eleven in the morning. Somebody with no stake in which version turns out to be true can tell you which way the fog is running, and that is usually what you came to find out. Readers are on at whatever hour this has got to, with 200 free credits to start and no card taken.

What people said after theirs

★★★★★

I went in wanting her to confirm he was lying and she asked me what time of night I had decided it. One in the morning, every single time. She did read him after that and it was duller than my version, and I have come round to thinking it was the right one.

What I did not expect was her turning it round and asking what the fog had been flattering rather than what it had been hiding. Two years of calling something freedom. I have not been able to unsee it since and I am honestly not sure I am grateful.

★★★★★

Asked three separate times what he was hiding and got no third person out of her at all, not even a hint of one. She said the card had no edges in it and anything with edges would have come from her rather than from it. Fair enough. Still wanted a name.

Questions people ask us

What does the Moon mean in a love reading?

It means the situation cannot be seen clearly at the moment, which is a statement about visibility rather than about anybody's honesty. Most pages go straight to deception because that is the dramatic reading and occasionally it is right. Far more often the card is describing distortion, which is a gap in what you know that fear or hope has quietly filled in. Working out which of the two is doing the filling is the actual reading, because this card runs in both directions.

Does the Moon mean he is lying to me?

Not on its own, and treating it as proof is how people end up accusing somebody on the strength of a picture. The card says the view is bad. A bad view covers a man being secretive and it covers a perfectly ordinary man being read at one in the morning by somebody who has been frightened since spring. If you want the honesty question answered you need what actually happened, stripped of everything you have joined up since, and no card substitutes for that.

What does the Moon reversed mean in love?

Usually the fog thinning, and it is one of the few reversals that is better news than the card upright. Something you have not been able to see resolves, and it tends to resolve into something more ordinary than either version you were carrying. The catch is that clearing works in both directions too. If the light comes up on a story you had been enjoying, the reversal arrives as a loss rather than a relief, and people are never warned about that half.

Is the Moon a bad card for a relationship?

Hard rather than bad. Nothing in it says the relationship is finished and nothing in it says anybody has done anything wrong. What it says is that you have been making decisions on partial information for a while, which is a condition rather than a verdict. Whether that is dangerous depends entirely on what you have been doing with the gap.

Does the Moon mean there is someone else?

It does not name anybody and it cannot. There is no identity anywhere in the card, which is why the same Moon turns up for a man who is having an affair, a man who lost his job in March and has not said so, and a man who is depressed and has no words for it. From where you are sitting those three produce nearly identical behaviour. That identical quality is the message of the card, not a hint about which one it is.

What does the Moon mean in a new relationship?

Early on it reads as a warning about your own speed rather than about him. Eight weeks in you have very little information and a great deal of feeling, and the card is pointing at the size of the difference between the two. That is normal and not a red flag by itself. It becomes one the moment you notice you are defending a conclusion you have no evidence for, whichever way the conclusion happens to run.
