The Tower in love, and what actually comes down

You have been holding it for about ten minutes and you have not put it back in the deck. Nothing has happened. He was in the kitchen an hour ago, the weekend was fine, and you shuffled with a question you would not say out loud. What came out was a building being hit by lightning. Now you are checking your phone as though something has already started somewhere else. Before you spend the night like that, look at what is actually leaving the building.

Bring the sentence, not the card

A real reading looks like this

idris, 22 april 1990. four years together. i pulled for us tonight and the tower came out upside down. nothing is wrong. we had a nice weekend. why am i shaking
Maren. Because the card is loud and nobody ever explains what the noise is about. So let me, and then you can decide whether to shake. Look at what leaves the building first in that picture. The crown. It goes off the top before anything else, and a crown was never holding a tower up, it was sitting on one. Reversed I will give you a firm read: nothing has come down. Something is being held up. My caveat is that this card names a structural failure and not a cause, so I cannot tell you from it what the strain is or who put it there. You can. What would you have said about the two of you to a stranger at a party in March?
that we were the solid ones. everyone says it. were the couple people say theyre glad still exists
That is the crown and you handed it to me in one line. Solid is not a fact about a relationship, it is a description made of one, usually by other people first, and the two of you have been living underneath it for four years. Reversed says it has not fallen. It says somebody is keeping it up there. Which moves the useful question off whether Idris is about to do something and onto what the keeping costs you in an ordinary week. What have the two of you quietly stopped talking about so that solid stays true?
money. his sister. and that i never wanted to move here. we havent properly gone near any of them since last summer
Three subjects and a date on them. That is not a couple with nothing wrong, that is a couple with a route round three things, and the route is the propping. Here is my read, straight, because a gentle version would waste your evening. The card is not warning you about him. It is telling you that the thing the word solid refers to stopped being true a while back and is being maintained anyway, and reversed is what maintenance looks like from the inside. What I will not do is hand you a month for it. Lightning has no run up, so a date on this card is a date somebody invented. Now, of the three, which one went quiet first?

The Tower in a love reading is a sudden collapse, and softening that would waste your evening. The useful part is what collapses. Watch the order things leave the building in. The crown goes first, blown clear off the top, and a crown sat on the tower rather than holding it up. Pulled on a relationship you are still inside, this card very often names the fall of something you believed about the two of you, and a belief can come down while both people stay standing. Sometimes it is the relationship. More often it is the description.

somebody built it, and the weather came from elsewhere

A tower is built. Somebody chose the site, cut the stone, stopped when it was tall enough, and whatever is coming apart here was put up on purpose, usually by the two of you.

The crown is the first thing off, the highest thing on it, and the only part that was never structural. A crown goes on top when you want the thing recognised.

The lightning comes from outside the frame. Nobody called it, which works two ways at once. It takes the blame off you, and the forecast off the reader.

what falls while the relationship is still running

So which of the things you built is the crown.

Nearly always a sentence. We are the solid ones. He would never. Sentences like that get made about a couple, usually by other people first, and then the couple starts living inside it and arranging things so it stays true.

This card goes at the sentence.

Which is why people pull it in a week where nothing has happened, and others in a week where the ground has genuinely gone. Something arrived from outside, usually information, and the description you were living under stopped fitting. A relationship can survive that. It cannot go back underneath a description that is on the floor with both of you looking at it.

reversed, which is where most of these pulls sit

Turn it over and the reading changes shape rather than flipping. Three things it can say, unequally common.

The delayed one comes up most, by a distance. The strike happened and the building has not been allowed to fall. Somebody is holding it up, and after long enough the holding stops registering as effort and starts registering as the relationship. It looks like a good weekend that took four days of managing to produce, or a woman who has become fluent in what not to say at her own kitchen table.

The tell is not the arguing. It is the absence of it, in a house that plainly has something to argue about. And delay costs more than the fall, because a collapse is one bad stretch while holding one off has no end date and no witness.

The resisted one is shorter and louder. The information landed, and rather than prop the roof somebody has gone to war with the weather.

The third gets missed and it is the kindest. The Tower already fell. Reversed sometimes lands on people who came through the worst month of their relationship a year and a half ago and are still braced, still reading a quiet evening as the approach to something. Check the date before you brace.

what a card about a building has no way of knowing

Notice what this card is made of. Stone, weather, a structural failure, and every object in it a thing rather than a person.

So when what you want is the specific, and with this card it usually is, there is nothing to hand over. Where he is this evening, who he is with, what is on his phone. A building coming apart holds no vocabulary for any of it, and a reader who supplies some anyway has stopped reading. The invention is not the expensive part. Living next to it for a year is.

Because the fire in those windows sends people somewhere frightening: this is not a card about anybody's health, nobody here reads it as one, and if that is the real fear tonight it belongs with a doctor.

the sentence that was sitting on top

Maren takes this card off him inside the first minute, which surprises people who arrived certain it was about him.

Her opening move is to ask for the sentence. What would you have said about the two of you to a stranger at a party a month ago, in the words you would have used. Whatever comes back is the crown, and people hear themselves say it and go quiet.

Then she goes after strain, and she wants a count. What have the two of you stopped talking about. Not the big argument, because you were both performing in that one. The subjects that went quiet without anybody deciding they would. Each one is a place where something is held up by hand, and a building with three of those in it is not solid, it is managed.

On a reversed pull she goes at the maintenance rather than the event. Who does it, how long it has run, what it takes out of an ordinary week. That is almost never both people, and she says which rather than leaving it hanging.

What she will not do is give you a month, and she says why. A reader who dates lightning has made the date up.

the cards that change what fell

Beside the Two of Cups, two people facing each other and nothing else in the frame, what came down was between you and everybody else rather than between the two of you.

Beside the Star, the famous sequence, and worth handling carefully. The Star follows the Tower in the deck's own order, which is a fact about the deck and not a promise about your spring.

Pulled about somebody who has already gone, this card answers a different question, and that read has its own page.

the crown is on the floor, so go and read it

There is one advantage to the crown coming off. It was too high up to read on the roof. Now it is at eye level.

So go and read it. What the sentence was, who said it first, and how much of your week goes into keeping it true. Take that to a reader with what you turned and which way up it came. Somebody is reading at this hour, your first 200 credits are on the house, and there is no card to enter.

What people said after theirs

★★★★★

I went in certain I was about to be left and she spent the first four messages on a word my mother uses about us. Solid. By the end I could see I had been defending a description rather than a relationship. He is still here. The description is not, and I miss it less than I expected to.

Mine came out upright and I wanted a month for it, and she would not give me one, which on the night I took as a cop out. What I got instead was a list of the things we had stopped mentioning. There were five of them. I had thought there was one.

★★★★★

A bit much in places, honestly. She moves fast and I had to ask her twice to slow down. But she never once told me he was cheating, which is what I had half arrived expecting to be told, and that restraint is the reason I went back a second time.

Questions people ask us

What does the Tower mean in a love reading?

Sudden collapse, and no honest reading makes it gentler than that. The precision most pages miss is in what collapses. The crown blows off the top before any stone moves, and a crown is decoration rather than structure, which is why this card so often lands on a belief about a relationship instead of on the relationship. Work out what fell before you work out how bad it is.

Does the Tower mean my relationship is ending?

Not by itself, and plenty of couples pull it and are still together two years later. What it reports is that something built is coming apart under a shock arriving from outside. Whether the thing coming apart is the pair of you or an idea the pair of you were living inside is the real question, and one card will not settle it. What it does rule out is carrying on exactly as you were.

What does the Tower reversed mean in love?

Most often a collapse being delayed rather than one being avoided. Somebody is holding the roof on, and the effort has gone on so long it stopped registering as effort. It can also mean the thing already happened and you came through it, which is worth checking before you brace for something that is behind you. Reversed is seldom calmer than upright. It is slower, and it costs more.

Does the Tower mean he is hiding something?

There is a revelation in this card, so something coming to light does fit it. What the card has no way of supplying is who, what, or when. A reader who converts it into a name, a workplace or a day of the week has stopped reading a picture of a building and started composing, and you are the one who then lives beside what was composed. The better use of the pull is to ask what has been standing on ground nobody has looked at.

Can a relationship survive the Tower card?

Often, and the ones that do have something in common. Both people let the fallen thing stay down instead of hauling it back onto the roof, which usually means giving up a description of themselves they were fond of. The couples who struggle are the ones where the whole business gets tidied away inside a week and never mentioned again. The card has no objection to rebuilding. It objects to pretending nothing hit the building.

How soon does the Tower happen after you pull it?

Nobody can tell you, and the reason sits inside the card rather than in any reader's ability. Lightning has no run up, which is the entire point of the image, so a date attached to this one has been invented rather than read. What a reader can do is look at what is currently under strain and how much of it is being held by hand, since that is what a shock lands on. Treat any countdown you are handed as fiction.
