The Wheel of Fortune for an ex, and how far the hope goes

Yes, this is one of the more encouraging cards to pull on an ex, and the reason it is encouraging is not the reason you want. It says the situation is going to move. It never says which way, and the same wheel that carries somebody back up carries them round and down the other side.

Look at where the creatures are.

A snake going down the left. A jackal-headed figure rising on the right. A sphinx at the top, sitting still, going nowhere for the moment.

Three positions, all of them temporary. Whatever sits at the top is on its way down. Whatever is climbing is not climbing, it is being carried, since nothing on that rim is doing any work.

Which is the honest reading for a return. If he comes back, this card has him arriving the way the figure on the right arrives: lifted there rather than choosing it. A return nobody chose is a return nobody is holding in place.

One more detail. The wheel has no marked beginning. No first notch, no last. It is the only object in the deck that guarantees you will be here again.

why it reads well on an ex

Movement. That is the offer, and it is genuine.

Most cards people pull about an ex describe a state. He is settled. He has gone on with it. A state is what makes waiting unbearable, because it has no edge on it. This card is different in kind: the arrangement you are in now, the silence or the three-month gap or the friendly nothing, has an end on it somewhere, even if the card will not read you the date.

For a lot of people that is the actual relief. Not that he is coming back. That this stops.

Where it goes wrong is the step everybody takes at one in the morning. Motion arrives with no direction attached, so you supply the direction, and by the next evening you remember the card as having supplied it.

the ex who comes back on a date

The pattern this card is best at, and nobody writes it down.

Some people come back on a decision. Others come back on a date. Birthdays. The anniversary of the night you met. The week before Christmas. The end of a season, when whatever had been filling his time stops filling it.

The return feels enormous because it seems to come out of nothing, and it seems to come out of nothing because a date came round.

Your own history settles it faster than any card. How many times has he come back, and what month was each one in. If they cluster, that is a cycle, and a cycle is not a change of heart.

This is the part that makes it hard rather than tidy. A return that runs on the calendar is still him missing you. It is missing that got set off rather than missing that got worked out. He is not performing. He is on a loop and knows about it roughly as well as you did.

the half that does not get published

A wheel that brings somebody round brings them round again.

If the return arrives on the mechanism the last one arrived on, expect it to run the way that one ran, unless something has changed outside the wheel: something said that was never said, something faced rather than walked around, a circumstance genuinely gone rather than paused.

The card is also poor for waiting, and poor for it because it reads hopeful. Movement is coming. Nothing on that rim asks you to sit still for it to arrive.

how Stella reads it

Stella works in cycles, so this is her card more than anybody's.

She will not ask for the date you want. She asks for the dates you already have. Every return, every leaving, as near as you can put them, laid out in order rather than taken one at a time. Then she looks at what each one sits next to. A birthday. The month you met. A season. The same six weeks of the year showing up twice.

When they cluster she says so straight away, because it changes what the rest of the reading is about. This is a calendar, not a change of heart. That sentence has cost people a rough ten minutes and saved them a year.

When there is no pattern, and often there is not, she says that too, and rates it the more hopeful finding. A return with no cycle underneath it came from somewhere else, and somewhere else is worth reading.

On timing she gives a stretch, and names it as the wheel's rather than the outcome's. A season, a moon, the weeks around something already in your year. Never a named week, because a named week off this card is a reader deciding to be liked.

What she will not do is describe his days back to you while you wait, or say who is near him. That is the card rather than caution. A machine in the sky with nobody on the ground anywhere in the picture holds nothing about one man's Tuesday, and a specific arriving from there was written by the reader, then lands on a real person who has done nothing.

the cards that change the read

With the Six of Cups the calendar reading gets louder. An old garden, one child handing another flowers, and beside a wheel that is the past arriving on schedule rather than because anybody reconsidered.

With Judgement you get the contrast worth learning. Both bring people back round. Only one has a reckoning in it. Judgement is figures standing up out of what they were lying in, having heard something. The wheel just goes round. If both are out, read the return off Judgement and let the wheel do the timing.

The same card pulled inside something still running goes elsewhere and has its own page. If this is the third or fourth time he has done it, why does he keep coming back is the closer question, and will he come back takes the return itself head on.

So the card handed you movement and kept the direction, which is the half nobody puts on a meanings page. Bring the dates rather than the last message. A reader reads the pattern instead of your hope and declines to invent the piece you came for. Somebody is on now, whatever hour this is.
