The Wheel of Fortune in love, and what has actually moved

The Wheel of Fortune in love says the situation is moving and says nothing whatsoever about anybody's feelings. That is the whole card, and it is why it feels enormous to pull and useless an hour later. Circumstances turn. What the two of you want stays exactly where it was on Tuesday.

Upright, a turn is under way. Reversed, either somebody is braced against a turn that is happening regardless, or a run of easy weeks has quietly ended.

Look for the hands. There are none.

Every other card in the Major Arcana has a person in it. Seated, walking, tied to a tree, holding something up. This one has a machine in the sky and three creatures riding it: a sphinx sitting still at the top, a snake sliding down the left, a jackal-headed figure coming up the right. All three are on the rim. Not one of them has hold of it.

That is odd enough to be the message. It is the only card in the deck where the thing happening is not being done by anyone.

Then look down. There is no down. No floor, no table, no room, no field. Every other picture in this deck is somewhere.

Out at the four corners, winged creatures with books open, not watching the wheel at all. They are the part that does not move. Whatever they are reading was true last year and is still true after the turn.

A change of circumstance, almost every time.

A contract ends. Your flatmate moves out. Somebody's mother gets ill. A rota changes and he is up at half four for three months. A friend group breaks apart and the two of you stop being in the same rooms on a Friday. None of that is a feeling. All of it changes what is available between two people: time, proximity, pressure, how many chances there are to be ordinary together.

The trouble is that circumstance and feeling produce identical symptoms. Fewer messages. A weekend that never gets suggested. Warmth arriving out of nowhere, or leaving.

So any movement at all gets read as movement of the heart, and that is the costliest misreading on this card, because the two ask completely different things of you.

The separation is duller than a reading usually is. Two lists. On the first, everything that changed in the last three months that neither of you decided, with a month against each one. On the second, the change in him, dated as closely as you can honestly get it.

A turn carries no direction with it. What the Wheel establishes is that the current arrangement is temporary, and temporary cuts both ways: the good stretch is not a promise, the stuck one is not a sentence.

It has no view on what the two of you do with the room that opens up either. Conditions arrive. Somebody still has to be in the mood.

And since there is nobody at ground level in that picture, there is nothing in it to ask about a man's week. It is a mechanism, not a witness. A reading off this card that comes back with a name or a workplace or a count of women was written by the reader, and an invented detail like that lands on somebody real who has done nothing at all. What genuinely reads here is how he feels about you and what has shifted around the pair of you.

Gillian will not take this card as an emotional forecast, and she says so early enough that nobody gets disappointed twice.

Her opening question is what changed that neither of you chose. She wants facts with months on them: job, money, housing, health, hours, somebody else's emergency, an exam, a visa. She builds that list before she turns anything, because a card about a mechanism gets answered with events rather than with moods.

Then she asks you to date him. Not how he is. When he changed.

If the outside event lands first and his change follows within a couple of weeks, she reads it as circumstance and tells you what that buys you: nothing about you was decided, and you are looking at a stretch rather than a verdict. If his change sits on its own with no event anywhere near it, that is the one she pulls again on, because that is where feeling actually lives.

The other thing she pushes back on is the fatalism. People hear cycles and destiny, decide the ending is already written, and stop counting themselves as a participant. Those four figures in the corners are the argument against it. Off the wheel entirely, unmoved by the turn.

Beside Justice it stops being luck. Scales, a sword, consequence, and the pair together describe a change that somebody's earlier decision has been quietly producing for a year. That is the more useful version, because a consequence can be traced back and luck cannot.

Somebody is holding the arrangement in the shape it had in February. Rarely out of meanness. Usually out of having nowhere to put the fact that it moved.
